There are no rules in rebuttals

Dear Editor,

This letter is definitely in rebuttal to the letter of January 14th, written by Ms. Deanna Drab.

In her letter, Ms. Drab attacks Ms. Carol Price about Ms. Price’s letter that apparently rebutted another letter from Ms. Drab.

I tried to find the ‘rules of rebuttal’ on the internet, but was amazed that there aren’t any. But, at least according to Ms. Drab, Ms. Price did not follow her ‘rules of rebuttal.’

I have read and re-read Ms. Price’s letter and I believe that it was one of the finest letters that the Pilot has printed in the last year.

I thought so when I first read it, and a second reading only served to solidify my initial belief.

Ms. Price was very respectful of the opinions voiced in the first letter. She showed genuine concern about our nation and the planet and was concerned with the ‘big picture’ rather than the short term.

She is willing to “pay the price now” - apparently Ms. Drab is not willing to pay any price.

So let’s look at Ms. Drab’s letter of January 14. She certainly is correct on one point - some things (like the right of free speech) should never change.

However, her quote of Thomas Jefferson may or may not be correct.

An internet search reveals that the quote (“When the people fear their government, there is tyranny; when the government fears the people, there is liberty.”)did not appear in print until 1914 (used by John Basil Barnhill while debating socialism) and was not even attributed to Jefferson until 1994.

To research the quote online, make certain you look at a research website, not one with a political view, as the quote has been misattributed by them recently.

Ms. Drab disagrees with the bailouts (that were started by her own conservatives - remember?) and taking over labor unions.

Have I totally missed something with this last point? Taking over the labor unions? News to me.

She is also against paying community action groups with government funds - an obvious reference to ACORN.

Of course, she fails to mention that throughout the Bush administration (and Republican control of Congress), ACORN and many others, including many ‘faith based’ organizations, were funded with government funds.

In point of fact, there was a proliferation of such funding under the Bush presidency.

And lastly, Ms. Drab needs to remember that there really was an election in November of 2008.

The people spoke then. And they will get another chance to do so later this year and every two years thereafter - yet another thing that we all hope will not change.

  • Look Who's Guarding the Henhouse

In 1998 Barney Frank and Chris Dodd were instrumental in getting legislation through President Clinton requiring banks and other mortgage companies to "look the other way" and give mortgages to homebuyers who could not afford the payments on the homes they were looking to purchase.  In many cases, these applicants had no down payment.

  • Fire Dept. issue needs to be resolved

I have been a resident of Henderson County and the city of Tool for seventeen years. I have been appalled by the ESD No. 4's unwillingness to compromise on the use of our tax dollars.  The citizens of Tool voted for an ad valorem tax to upgrade the cities fire department, fire fighting equipment and firefighting training.  ESD No. 4 quickly jumped in to misappropriate our tax funds for their own use.
