Family Resource Center needs community’s help
Gun Barrel City — The Family Resource Center is asking for assistance from the community.
The FRC has been providing financial and living assistance to individuals and families in the lake area for 20 years.
“We’re in need of money,” employee Winnie Branam said.
Although it needs mainly monetary donations, it would like to receive gently used furniture and household items.
With the current increase in electricity rates, and the downfall of the economy, more people are asking for help, and the FRC is short on funds to provide the necessary assistance.
Some of the services the FRC provides to people of all ages in Henderson County are:
• paying utility bills;
• paying rent;
• purchasing propane;
• purchasing prescriptions, food and clothing.
To help FRC shoppers the center has lowered all of its prices. Right now all winter clothing is 50 percent off, including coats.
Other items found at the FRC are:
• books;
• housewares;
• jewelry;
• furniture;
• electronics;
• clothes and shoes for men, women, kids and teens, plus a whole lot more.
Toni Muirhead opened the two room FRC in the 1980s.
Over the last 20 years, it has grown into a multi-room, departmentalized business offering employment and volunteer opportunities to people in all situations.
For example, members of the community who have been assigned community service hours have been allowed to serve those hours at the FRC.
This helps not only those individuals but the community by providing much needed support to the center.
The FRC “works with United Way, TXU, the Salvation Army, local churches and other various organizations to provide any service that an individual or family might need,” Branam said.
Branam said she has also helped people by calling insurance companies for information, or getting in touch with the social security office to find answers for senior citizens questions.
According to Branam, the FRC is a much needed resource to families in the Henderson County area, and it needs your help.
If you, your church, business or organization would like to make a donation to or become a volunteer at the Family Resource Center, you may do so by visiting either location at:
• 107 Spring Valley, Gun Barrel City, Tamarack;
• 205 W. Cedar Creek Pkwy, Seven Points.
If you have questions about donations or services call 903-887-4711 and ask for Toni Muirhead or Winnie Branam.
