Driver still at large

PAYNE SPRINGS — A high-speed car chase Sunday that concluded with a white, stolen 1994 Pontiac Firebird in the ditch, has resulted in the arrest of an area man.

The driver of that car, however, managed to escape on foot and hasn’t been seen since.

Twenty-four-year-old Miles Grey surrendered when the car came to a halt in the ditch and officers approached.

He was booked into Henderson County Jail and charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, evading arrest and detention with a vehicle .

He was arraigned at 6:15 a.m. Monday and Pct. 1 Judge Henry Ashford set bond on the two charges at $3,500 per offense.

As of Tuesday afternoon, Miles remained in jail.

The other man has not been identified and the investigation is ongoing, according to Payne Springs Police Chief Chris Meyers.

He said patrol officer Michael Roach grew suspicious when he saw two men parked behind a local business during closing hours.

Roach was going to contact the persons in front of the parked vehicle, Meyers said.

But when Roach approached the men, they jumped in the car. The driver put it in reverse and pulled away.

While in pursuit, according to Roach’s report, the Firebird reached speeds of 120 to 130 miles per hour.

The Firebird sped along State Highway 198 going south from the Payne Springs bridge on State Highway 198 near Cherokee Shores.

The vehicle then turned right onto Frazier Lane, which dead-ends at Double -Bridge Road.

That’s when the vehicle ran into a ditch.

Roach was assisted by Henderson County Sheriff’s patrol officers in the pursuit.

“The man (who escaped) was pretty quick,” Meyers said. “He was about 6-feet-1 and had a slim build.”

The investigation of the man who fled the scene is continuing.
