Top 5 Stories of 2009 - No. 4 Mabank bank robber caught on video
On January 23, a medium sized man in a western straw hat walked into the First State Bank of Mabank and quietly demanded money.
Dean Spencer, later identified by lake area residents and bank employees, handed the bank teller a note demanding all the money in her drawer and said “Don’t do anything stupid.”
After receiving the money, Spencer simply turned and walked out the door.
Mabank police, including Chief Kyle McAfee and officer Chris Rhen, responded to the 911 call from the bank within one minute.
Texas Rangers and the FBI were also called in to aid in the investigation.
Although details of the suspect and his vehicle from eye witnesses was sketchy, the entire incident was caught on tape.
Still photos were taken from the video footage and released to the public a week later.
On February 8, Spencer was arrested by the Grapevine Police on the Mabank arrest warrant, and gave McAfee a complete confession.
He was transported to Kaufman County Jail on Feb. 10 with his bond set at $50,000.
Spencer was tried and found guilty of robbery. He was sentenced to four years in State Jail on August 13, 2009.
