Pilot reports the news for 40 years
Cedar Creek Pilot looking back over the years of publication
The year was 1971.
Richard Nixon was president, the U.S. population was over 200 million people, and the Baltimore Colts beat the Dallas Cowboys in Super Bowl V.
And, in the communities surrounding Cedar Creek Lake, the Athens Review Lake Shopper, a free weekly distribution newspaper, was keeping residents informed of all news.
In May 1971, Dan Dwelle took over as publisher for the Lake Shopper renaming it the Cedar Creek Pilot.
Then in November 1973, Dwelle converted the free weekly newspaper to a paid circulation semi-weekly paper.
The Pilot moved into a new home in Seven Points in 1977 where it remained for the next eight years.
1985 brought about expansion for the small town newspaper.
The Pilot opened a new office in Gun Barrel City to handle advertising and circulation, and moved its behind the scenes operations (typesetting and paste up) from Athens to Seven Points. The Seven Points office also housed the editorial staff.
Over the last 40 years the lake area has seen tremendous growth and change.
Henderson County’s population alone increased by over 53,000 people, and will continue to grow as people find lake life here more and more appealing.
With such a substantial increase in population, naturally an increase in business followed.
Many local small businesses like bait and tackle shops, feed stores and cafes were replaced by large name retail establishments and national food franchises.
One lane dirt roads have been replaced by four lane highways, and small country homes near the lake have grown into expensive upscale lake houses all around it.
Even with the vast growth of the society, the people here have not changed. There is still that small town feeling and friendly rapport throughout the community.
Another aspect that has not changed over the last 40 years is the way the Cedar Creek Pilot reports the news.
Now entering it’s 40th year, the Pilot continues its tradition of providing it’s readers with current and late-breaking news.
"The Cedar Creek Pilot has not only chronicled the development and growth of the vibrant lake area, it has played a leading and formative role in the process,” Dan Dwelle said.
“For 40 years the Pilot, through its staff, has served in the important capacity that only a strong community newspaper can. I am confident that this tradition will continue to the benefit of the readers, businesses and organizations that it serves," Dwelle said.
