Lady Jackets remain unbeaten
KEMP (64): Brianna Powell 9, Amanda Lawrence 13, Brandy Simmons 0, Shelbie Wright 5, Brittany Henderson 2, Michelle Ritterbach 13, Brittany Simmons 10, Shannon Shipp 8, Kandace Rose 4.
The Lady Jackets held a thin 44-40 lead over Wills Point going into the final period on June 13, but finished strong, outscoring the Lady Tigers 20-8 in the fourth to remain unbeaten in 14-3A play with a 64-48 victory.
"When we got into the fourth quarter, we were able to break their press," said Coach Kent Smith.
For instance:
"At one point Michelle Ritterbach broke free and dribbled toward the last defender, crossing the ball over and leaving the defender to watch her lay the ball up unopposed," he said.
The Yellow Jackets, 17-7 and 2-0, terrorized Wills Point from beyond the arc, hitting six threes during the game. Brittany Simmons and Amanda Lawrence had two each, and Brianna Powell and Ritterbach had one each.
"Our outside game was excellent," Smith said. "We also had a strong inside game with Shannon Shipp (10 points, seven rebounds), Shelbie Wright (five points, five rebounds, and Kandace Rose (four points, four rebounds) all getting involved offensively."
Michelle Ritterbach (13 points, 4 of 6 free throws, 7 rebounds, 4 steals) and Amanda Lawrence (13 points, 5 of 6 free throws) led the scoring.
In the first quarter, despite good outside shooting, Wills Points held a 17-15 lead. Brittany Simmons had two of her three points in that quarter.
