Panther take on Mesquite Poteet this Friday

MESQUITE — The Panthers lost a heartbreaker on a disputed call to Red Oak last week, and it put Coach Jimmy Cantrell’s team, temporarily, at least, out of the District 15-4A title race.

In fact, it was the second year in a row for the Panthers to lose a heartbreaker to this team.

Last year, it was a fumble in overtime that cost the Panthers the game.

It’s Mesquite Poteet in Memorial Stadium in Mesquite this Friday.

The Panthers had a chance to even their district record at 1-1 until what they thought was a third-down play, became a fourth-down play.

Red Oak took over and kneed its way to victory, letting the clock run out.,

Poteet has won just one of six games, but that one was impressive, stopping Frisco, 50-14.

Since opening District 15-4A competition, the Pirates have fared poorly, losing to perhaps the three best teams in the league, Forney, 30-7, Lancaster, 31-7, and West Mesquite, 40-16.

The Panthers, after a 3-0 start against 3A schools, has dropped its first two District 15-4 contests.

The Panthers were beaten by Terrell and last week in the controversial 14-7 loss to Red Oak.

The Panthers are still trying to establish a running game opponents will respect.

Quarterback Jordan Featherston threw 50 footballs against Red Oak but had just 12 completions.

The Red Oak defense, as a result, gave Featherston a hard time all night long.

Still, if the Panthers had been able to argue successfully for one more down, who knows what might have happened.

They hope to take out that frustration on Mesquite Poteet Thursday night.

 Most teams have this season.

Coach Charles Hesse is 30-31 during his stay at Poteet,

Mabank is 3-2 overall and 0-2 in District 15-4A.
