Lady Jackets re-ignite for a 59-44 win over Van
KEMP: 12-19-7-21 — 59
VAN: 7-12-18-7 — 44
KEMP (59) — Briana Powell 14, Amanda Lawrence 6, Brandy Simmons 6, Michelle Ritterbach 19, Brittany Simmons 12, Shannon Shipp 2.
KEMP — The Lady Jackets came out hot, lulled themselves to sleep, then woke up in the fourth period to wipe out Van, 59-44.
The Lady Jackets had a 31-19 halftime lead, but a third-quarter lull pulled the Lady Vandals by the end of the third period.
Kent Smith had a meeting of the minds with his squad at that point and they responded by overwhelming Van 21-7 in the final period to take a solid 59-44 District 14-3A victory.
"We came out strong in the first half, making steals on defense, and hitting shots from all over the floor, especially from beyond the arc,” Smith said.
But after roaring to the 31-19 halftime lead, the Lady Jackets got too conservative and allowed Van to get back in the game, trailing 38-37 after three periods.
"We were able to go with five guards (or four guards and a forward depending on how you look at it)," said Smith. “We were able to get several more steals in the fourth and Briana Powell (sophomore - first year varsity) had an excellent quarter scoring nine of her 14 points (including a three); helping us to outscore them 21 - 7 leading to the final score of 59 - 44,”he said. “Overall, our perimeter game was good, hitting a nine for 26 night from three point range," he said.
The Lady Jackets had 17 steals to only 12 turnovers in the contest.
Michelle Ritterbach was high scorer with 19 points, including three 3s, six rebounds, six steals) followed by Powell (2 threes) and Brittany Simmons, who had 12 points (2 threes, 5 assists and a block).
Brittany is still leading the state in taking charges (all schools, all classifications) with 22 after taking 2 charges Friday night. She is currently number 4 in the nation as well as reported by MaxPreps.com. Amanda Lawrence had the other 2 threes for 6 points total. Shannon Shipp had a good game defensively pulling down five rebounds with two blocks and two steals while contributing two points.
With the district win over Van, the Lady Jackets are now 16 -7 overall, 1 - 0, in district. Kemp is still unbeaten at home with a 6-0 record.
